Low Tide

‘Low Tide’ was my very first solo show in March 2024, and when I was contemplating an artist statement for the exhibition, I came across this quote by Soul Surfer, storyteller and film-maker, Nathan Oldfield and he says it all so beautifully!

 

“For me personally, I’m interested in the idea of surfing with a pure heart. Because when your heart is open and receptive to an intimacy with the sea, a wealth of gifts can be discovered. A surfing life can impart so much: patience, humility, wisdom, an understanding of the significance of beauty, the desire for wildness, the connection to place, a sense of belonging in the world and the appreciation of the value of pure, simple joy.”

I began my surfing life at the age of 59, 4 years ago, and was instantly captivated! It truly is a practice of living in the moment and taking in all that surrounds you. If your mind wanders, for just one moment, the ocean has all sorts of reminders in store for you.

 

I hope that, through my artworks, you can feel the wonder, the awe, the gratitude and the pure, simple joy I feel in this amazing new world of all things ‘ocean’ that I’ve discovered.
